Teaching at Conservatory Lab

Teaching Philosophy

Our unique approach allows teachers to teach skills and concepts, while creating opportunities for students to apply their learning to challenges in their community.

Teams design fieldwork learning experiences where students work in an authentic environment with expert professionals, making connections from the concepts introduced in class to and applying solutions in their communities.

El Sistema

Conservatory Lab is the only K-8 school in the United States to integrate El Sistema’s equity-focused and ensemble-based approach to music education into its daily curriculum.

Students receive music instruction from resident artists every day, learning music literacy, composition, and improvisation. General music classes begin in Pre-K. In grade 1, all students are assigned to violin, viola, or cello and play together as an orchestra. In grade 3, students have the opportunity to join a winds and brass ensemble, or continue with the strings program.

Student instruction consists of full orchestra rehearsals, sectional rehearsals, one-on-one lessons with visiting artists or peers, and small group instruction. Students are challenged with level-appropriate music that builds confidence in their abilities and a life-long appreciation for multiple styles of music.

With growing pride with each concert, our students perform throughout the year at venues including Jordan Hall, Strand Theatre, and the Massachusetts State House.

Expeditionary Learning

EL Education is a comprehensive school reform model that enhances engagement, elevates achievement, and builds character. Conservatory Lab’s rigorous and joyful EL curriculum embeds an inquiry-based pedagogy that centers students in their own learning. The EL motto “We are crew, not passengers” emphasizes a participatory culture that fosters cooperation, empathy, and responsibility.

Learning Expeditions

Throughout their time at Conservatory Lab, students engage in a progression of interdisciplinary learning expeditions, aligned with Common Core state standards, which integrate social studies, science, English language arts (ELA), math, music, and art.

Each learning expedition is anchored in an inquiry-based project and performance approach that incorporates rigorous research, fieldwork, experts, and student–engaged assessment.
