Andres Cruz-Torres Will Head Up New Middle School
At a meeting with the parents of current 5th and 6th graders, Diana Lam, Head of School, spoke briefly about facilities and then turned the floor over to Andres Cruz-Torres who will head up the Middle School. The plans for next year are already at full tilt. Mr. Cruz-Torres went into detail as to what the priorities will be: Academics, Music and Social Emotional Learning. Academics will be organized by subject matter: Science, Math, Language Arts and Social Studies, which will be taught by specialists in that area. Ms. Ivy Delaney will be the Math Teacher, Ms. Caitlin Dwyer-Huppert will be the Science teacher and Mr. Cruz-Torres is interviewing a number of talented candidates for the other areas.
Music will have several components; those students presently in Dudamel will continue in that orchestra while new incoming students will participate in an alternative musical program still in the design phase. The new Steward for Citizenship who will also oversee the daily physical activity, and provide academic support, which will strengthen every student’s study and organizational skills, will coordinate the Social Emotional Learning curriculum.
Each teacher in the middle school will also head up a crew team of 10-12 students that will meet every day. As a kick-off to the whole experience, there will be an 8 day-summer orientation prior to the beginning of school that will include a 3-day/2-night Outward Bound type experience on Thompson Island. All in all, these elements add up to a very rich and full year for our new middle school scholars!
