7th Graders Visit Boston Globe

On April 5, our 7th graders took a tour of the Boston Globe, and had an opportunity to talk with Astead Herndon, the Globe reporter who wrote the article on theĀ FrederickĀ DouglassĀ monument that sparked their recent student letters. The students got a behind the scenes look at the work of a major daily newspaper and learned how a Metro reporter works a story from idea to research to writing to publication often in just one day. They saw old printing presses and new “robots” that the paper now uses to stack paper and move bundles around. They learned that all our local papers are printed in the same factory and more about the different kinds of work that gets done in this important civic institution. Our students were impressed with the Globe offices and the reporter was equally impressed with our students.
