In Memoriam: José Antonio Abreu

Conservatory Lab is incredibly saddened by the passing of José Antonio Abreu. Dr. Abreu was a fierce advocate for poor and working-class children in Venezuela and as a result, created El Sistema in an attempt to address their needs. His idea of lifting children (spiritually, emotionally, and if lucky enough financially) out of their circumstances through music has created a revolution in the music education community across the globe. As a result of his passionate vision thousands of programs, including Conservatory Lab Charter School, were created and have gained momentum because of Venezuela’s successful music education model.

At Conservatory Lab we have enjoyed being part of a thriving Sistema inspired program that was started in 2010. It has been part of the essential fabric of our school culture bringing joy, creativity and community engagement to our students, families, and staff. Conservatory Lab will forever be grateful to Dr. Abreu. His love and generosity will live on and be felt for generations to come.
